Indicator stems...

Has anyone successfully removed and replaced the stems from the GT indicators?

My RE5 is a US delivered model and consequently has the longer (wider?) stems in the indicators - I'd like to convert them to the shorter style.
I'm forever knocking them moving the bike around (and the shorter ones look better IMO), I have plenty of the shorter Euro stems in my spares stash to swap them out with.

Looking at the way the indicators are put together, it would seem fairly straightforward if the stems aren't pressed in too tight.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Paul, I removed the stems from mine and replaced with the shorter ones. It's pretty easy but after you remove the bolt & nut you may need to pry the clamp piece open with a flat blade screwdriver. Don't overdo it or it might break. Couple of squirts of penetrating oil might be need too. Biggest challenge is the wiring. If I recall correctly I think you might have to cut the terminal off to get the wire back through the stem. Other option is to unsolder from the bulb holder end if you want to keep the stock terminal.

You may also find that you need to dress the splines with a needle file for fit, especially if the stems have been re-chromed or are off repro signals - but swapping the stems over is quite doable. 8)

+1 to the above. I redid all the indicators on my GT 750 as they all had crappy or wrong stems. It is just about being methodical and patient. The wiring is a challenge but nothing that can't be overcome. They all work correctly and look the part after being rebuilt. So, go for it
