Suzuki 2 Strokes

I'm replacing a later model starter button on my J Buffalo with the correct one for the year (pebbled finish). However, I'm not sure how to get the throttle mechanism hooked up on the replacement. As you can see from the photos below, (first two are front and back shots of the later starter and second two of the 72 one) the correct one has another piece screwed into the right hand side slot, whilst the later model one does not. What is this piece and what does it do? Why did the throttle work without this piece in the later model one? Also, how do I hook up the throttle mechanism with that in place? When I screwed it all together the throttle clicked as I twisted the grip, it then turned back to a certain point but needed to be clicked back to the rest position.

Your J switch may be incomplete - there is an adjuster (57170-11011) that has a threaded stem that sticks out the bottom, and is secured with a nut. It acts as a drag clutch (sort of) on the throttle twist. I don't see it on your photo, although the tang that the threaded stem fits to does seem to be on the inside. Take a close look on a parts list (it is #6 on this page for example) for the switch gear - that part does still list as good on the US Suzuki supplier lists.

Thanks for the reply and the link Ian. I've checked the parts diagram with what is in there and I actually do have it in situ. I can adjust it up and down by turning the threaded screw that exits out the bottom part. All I need is to put a nut on there .

Now, my next question is how does it work and what should I be aware of as I reassemble it? When I tried putting the throttle together, I didn't know it could be adjusted so that may account for the apparent lack of success. Any advice on how to hook it all up would be appreciated - as there's still some ok weather for riding down here (at the moment )

The piece is screwed in at the bottom ( is to adjust up and down ) it's there to take up the slack in the twist grip.. And you might have it too tight, ( too far up) so make sure, the grip can return easy.. Not all switches have them, as people try to restore them, and don't know what there for, so don't put them back on.. Make sure when you put it back on, it moves easy, to the return closed position, the nut on the bottom, is to lock it...
