i have made up some blanking plugs to test my crank seals ,
all the sris valves are blocked off too.
i have all ports plugged and i wonder if it matters what the piston possition is at.

That's different, but as long as the intake exhaust and plug are all blocked off, it should work (at least on a reed motor). It makes no difference which way you apply pressure unless you want to take the piston to TDC to check ring blow by.
That's a valid test but to test crank seals, you need the piston close to bdc so that the transfers are open and the exhaust is open to the bottom end. If the piston is at BDC, in all probability, the intake will be closed by the piston and you may get zero PSI reading with the gauge in the intake.
So it's easier to fit the gauge in the plug hole and blank off the intake.
i did it this way because of the lack of access to the center cylinder for the giant gauge, i didnt want to have a remote gauge as that is another joint and possible leak.
