GT550 oil pump question

Post by csd4t »

OK chaps the bike is slowly coming together oil tank is filled up and bled by removing the bleed screw, the octopus was never removed and as far as I can see is still filled with oil. If I open up the pump lever and use the kickstart to spin the bike over (no head fitted yet) should I be able to see oil at the nozzle in the inlet port? I can't see any coming out any ideas/thoughts please?

If you kick hard enough for long enough with throttle wide open, you should eventually see something.

Do it the easy way. Pop the pump off and use an oil can filled with oil that is a different color to the oil in the tank. Force that into the lines. Fit the pump and run it for a few minutes and see if the oil in the lines has changed color.

I don't know how similar the 550 oil pump is to the T500, but this is what I did. Especially since I've had zero luck forcing oil into oil lines:

Oil lines (all 3) connected to the pump, and the banjos disconnected from the head and case. Oil pump removed from the engine, and held in my hand. Pulled lever full back. Used electric drill, with very large flat blade screwdriver bit. Being certain to spin in the right direction, drove the oil pump (at moderate speed with variable speed drill) until Lines were full, air bubbles were gone, and I confirmed oil was exiting from all the lines.

There's no throttles on (carbs not fitted) and I'm sure the lines are still full of oil. I'm just winding the kickstart over and watching the nozzles in the inlets but nothing as yet.

+1. That is what I'd suggest. But, with the 550. Just put the shaft in the bit holder of the drill. No need for flat bit.
