They're way worse than mine and I'm replacing them. Once the hard casing is gone then it's not long before the teeth will degrade even faster. Oil won't stop it wearing as the inner metal isn't hard.

You will likely need more than just a few gears eh ? Looking at the photo it looks to me as if the drive shaft is blued which would mean its like no good either, and if the original gear set had a similar amount of wear then you will need to take a very close look at everything in the box.

As someone who is about to tear into a 500 engine myself... what should these gears look like? Anyone have a
picture? I'm afraid of breaking down the rest of my engine because I'm afraid I'm going to find something similar and
then I'll be stuck. Ignorance is bliss.

They sure as heck should not be pitted like you see in the photo further up this thread ! Basically if they are polished, shiny and smooth then you likely are OK. You still need to look closely at the bearings etc. Any pits, abraded spots or bits missing on the faces of the gear teeth though means they are not serviceable.
