72 T500J - Gearbox Oil Level Mod

I have the small rubber dam to fit into my 72 T500J for the oil level mod. Just a question about splitting the cases - I assume there is no problem in turning the engine over and removing the lower or bottom case to expose the transmission to allow you to fit the rubber dam? My service manual talks about ensuring that the crank and transmission remain in the lower case when splitting the case. Also, should you use an adhesive when fitting the rubber dam - if so, what type and make is best suited?

I was hoping it would be easier to do it the other way around and not have to remove the pistons - oh well, that's life. The dam is from Clauss Studios

I have some TIG work that needs to be done elsewhere on the case, so I was just going to have the dam built up at the same time by the same guy. Seemed a better idea than a glued in urethane/rubber dam

Make sure that your welder heats the cases first and doesn't get too much heat in the weld or else the cases will distort. I have had several sets of cases welded and one had quite a twist in it after it cooled down and the others were done on a hot case with a more patient welded and they were fine.

Good points - the fellow doing the work is quite good and is well known locally for doing this same sort of work to a high standard, but it never hurts to ask the questions eh ?
