Reassemble T500 engine -- Any tips?

I am preparing to reassemble a '72 T500 engine after it sitting in pieces for 18 months or so. I am not the disassembler, so am flying somewhat blind, but with a repair manual. I have a specific question, but would also welcome any tips or thoughts you might have.
My question is this: should I use liquid gasket or gasket shellac on the mating surfaces when I assemble the two pieces of the crankcase? The repair manual seems to indicate that I should, but the previous assembler did not seem to do so - the mating surfaces of the cases are as clean as can be, showing no sign of gasket goop. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
As well, I am open to any other thoughtful tips you might have on engine reassembly. I appreciate all counsel.
Regards,
STAN
