FNG with a Massive Air Leak???

Just when I thought I was all alone with my little GT250, I find this message board (and breath a sigh of relief)!!

I have a 1976 GT250 that hasn't run in at least 8 years. After cleaning and rebuilding the carbs, new petcock gaskets and seals, new battery, and a Fuel Tank clean out..... She started on the second kick; but...

...She immediately revs up to 10 grand, then dies out. I screwed around with the air mixture and it seemed to help the tiniest bit. turning the choke on will keep it running a few seconds longer. The air cleaner boot is sealed tightly on the carbs and the air cleaner box, carbs are tight into the intake ports; but, the way it acts keeps making me think Air Leak.

Any thoughts??

I've never owned a GT250. I looked at an online fiche and I see it has a vacuum operated petcock. Check the hose from carb to petcock for cracks or splits. Replace any that look suspect. If the petcock has been changed to a manual one, make CERTAIN the vacuum fitting on the carb is capped (blocked off). If left open, that's your massive air leak.

See if you have the carb slides in backwards, right one in the left carb.

Thanks Fellas... The slides were in backwards; and, the exhaust baffles were lightly packed with steel wool. (?????)

Moving forward now. More Q's to come.....
