GT750 warped side covers can be fixed.

Post by Suzsmokeyallan »

Most side covers for the 74 to 77 model of GT750 get sunken in the middle under the badges and bulged outwards somewhat by the pin holes and this whole effect looks quite lousy.
You can fix this to look perfect again with a small butane torch, even if they are painted already or are in great condition paint-wise.
To do this, remove the emblem and with the inside of the cover facing up, place your hand over the outside of the cover to support it while applying heat to the inside, you want to feel how hot the cover is getting, so your hand will tell you when its warming up and to what extent.
If you over heat it you will burn yourself and destroy the paint AND the cover, so you need to be very careful, therefore move with caution and take your time and do not rush the heating process.
Once its warmed up a bit around the first pin hole section remove the torch and you should be able to push it in to the desired location and then apply some cold water to "reset it". It may take a bit of trial heating / pushing if you are not used to doing this sort of work to get the final position correct, but it will come eventually.
Once the first hole is done move to the next one and repeat, the last section will be the middle of the cover between the holes, just work the heat carefully and press on the sections to make sure everything looks level, then cool it off to set in the new shape.
Here's a typical cover with "before and after" photos I redid before stripping it, as you can see the paintwork still looks unburnt after the restoration work.

The cover as it was, distorted by the holes and sunken in the middle.

Very neatly straightened and the crappy paintjob is still in the same shape.
Two strokes, its just that simple.
