T500 sidestand options

Frame bracket for the sidestand broke off yesterday. Broke as I was kickstarting it, so at least I still have the stand.

Don't know much about welding. Can the bracket be welded to the frame without removing the engine?
Any options for a sidestand that doesn't require welding?

Don't know much about the bike's history. Fork lock bracket was removed. Think the sidestand bracket may have be removed and reattached with inadequate welds. Frame was repainted.

Its the same bike that had the speedo problem due to way the front wheel was mounted, and the leak from a fork oil drain screw. Bike does run fine though.

They make bolt on side stands for the chopper guys but what I would do first is pull the pipes off and start checking the frame for corrosion. The bracket would not just drop off on it's own. Either there is some serious rust going on the frame or a previous owner hit something hard enough to weaken the bracket's attachment to the frame (you should be able to see scrapes or dents on the pipes as a result of a hard hit I would think). The last thing you want is the frame breaking up as you are riding.....

edit: wait, were you kick starting it with it on the side stand???? Or did the folded side stand fall off while you were kick starting it?

Thanks! I hadn't thought about safety and the possibility the frame could be bad.

The bike was on the sidestand & I was kickstarting it with my right foot.

Muffler has several dents on the side near the sidestand. The sidestand is also bent. Looks like the damage could be the result of forgetting to raise the sidestand and then crashing.

The sidestand bracket broke off with most of the weld still on the frame. The is very little rust anywhere on the bike. Frame looks ok, but it was repainted & issues could be hidden.

I store a few bikes at bike shops during the winter. So I'm probably going to get the bike ready for winter storage, and then store it at a bike shop that also does welding. They can check the frame & weld the bracket on in the off season.
