hello
my friend just bought a GT380, unfortunately after only a block of riding the plastic timing gear broke in three. We got a new one from PM and we are now trying to get the timing right, what is the trick to doing this right?
thanks
ryan

Hi, this diagram shows how:
You have to line the dot on the breaker cam drive gear (on the end of the crank) up with the pointer mounted on the crankcase.
Fit the nylon drive gear on the breaker cam, then align the 3-legged plate that has L, C & R stamped on it, so that the L mark lines up with the rib on the clutch cover.
Then fit the cover
gently, trying to keep the L mark aligned to the clutch cover rib as the nylon gear meshes with the crank drive gear. It won't always line up spot on, it may move a couple of millimeters either way.
When the gears mesh, tighten the cover down, check it all spins freely, then mount the points plate, set the point gap to 0.3 - 0.4mm, then strobe to the marks (or use a dial gauge if you prefer).
Good luck!
