Gear Indicator troubles

Riding my GT750M this past weekend the '3' on my gear indicator started to flicker and then went out completely. I have a spare indicator but am wondering if it's even worth tracing the lines or if it's common for these to go out and I should just replace the indicator and be done with it. the bike has 46,000 miles.

Pop it off and test it. It may be a broken wire or crappy connection or poor contacts in the rotary switch. If it's the indicator display itself they are available very cheaply on ebay

Alright, it sounds like I'll have to do some checking. The bike's got 900 miles since the engine rebuild so it could be as simple as not snapping a connector in all the way. We'll see and like I said I do have an extra so no big deal either way.

Just an update, I plugged in my spare gear indicator the other day just to see and 3rd still wasn't working so the problem's in the wiring or sensor. I tested resistance through the wires from the indicator back to the connector under the side cover and all tested good (0-2ohms actual). When I got to the connector there, wiggling it would make the '3' go on and off so I'll be ordering a new connector and wire sheathing tonight from Vintage Connections. I'll clean the wires, put on a new connector and hopefully that should fix the problem.

Restored the wire and connector using Allan's wire restoration thread and all is good now. The next step is to go up a size with the pilot jets per Coyote's comments in my Temporary high idle at stop lights thread. Then I'll put everything back together and enjoy the warm weather we've been having here in Michigan.

the gear indicator on my GT380 only shows 4, 8, and 9. Riding in 9th gear is a blast....lol.

I sometimes have an 8 show up when I've been riding in the rain with my GT550L! Too bad the roads are wet at the time, I'd really like to know how she pulls in 8th.!!
