GT750 wiring question

I am in the middle of trying to get a gt750 I bought started. The wiring harness was the victim of what appears to be a fire. I had a replacement wiring hanress and everything seemed to line up. I had to transfer over the connecter because some of the new wiring harness connectors were dry rotted. The problem I am having is the orange lead that goes to the coils then to the points seems to be grounded some where. When I take a reading from the + side of my battery to the orange line I get 12V. The orange line is not connected to the "hot wire" during the test. The orange line is only supposed to have 12V when connected to he red "live wire" correct? I traced the grounded out portion of the orange line all the way to the rear junction panel. It all looks correct though. I went to bed stumped. Any idea on a part reg/rectifier that could be bad causing this? Because of this I am getting no spark because the positive side of the points is neg like the block.
Thanks.
