Crank Removal Recommendations

Post by evol02 »

Morning everyone,
I've been tearing apart the '69 T500-II parts bike I acquired about 8 years back, and I am on the very very last piece. I can not for the life of me, get the crank out. Is it typically this stubborn when it comes time to remove them? This is actually my first complete teardown of a T500! Any words of advice or cautionary tales? My T500-2 service manual doesn't mention anything about crank removal...

To complicate matters, this engine has had a smattering of warning signs. There are JB Weld patches all over the inside and outside of the case, although nobody actually put the 1400cc mod in there! I've been finding that many of the parts have been stubborn due to residue of JB Weld or other bonding/sealant agents. The last thing I want to do is be hitting the crank end upwards with a rubber mallet to knock it loose, but I'm afraid that might be the only thing left that I haven't tried!
Cheers!

I don't know, but you might try inverting the case on a couple of risers --- then tap on the case. You might have to use an aluminum block and a hard hammer to 'shock' it out.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Coyote,
Fantastic idea. I have it upsidedown on blocks already, but had not thought to knock the case. Considering the case is destroyed (much love to previous owners and JB Weld), this is even MORE of an excellent idea...
Thanks!

It took a while, but that strategy worked, and the crank dropped right on a nice soft pillow of shop rags.
Cheers!

Don't know if you are interested but I've got a complete crankcase (both halves) for a 1972 Titan in very good condition that I'll sell ($150 plus shipping).

PM if interested.........

Thanks Capt, but I'll pass.
This 69 was bought in hopes of rebuilding, but every single piece has be fubared. I mean every piece. I've stripped all the internals out to try to salvage something for my '69 runner, but this hunk isn't worth investing in new cases to resurrect.
