Why did the previous person put on a shorter chain?

Hey so I have a 1972 TS185. Has both stock front 12T and rear 39T sprocket. Everything I search for on the internet says it is a 520 102 link chain. Since I am replacing things I looked at the chain that is on there and the previous owner put a 96 link chain on it. Is google wrong? Or did they put a much shorter chain for some weird reason?

To note when the chain is tight the adjustment notch is dead on and also neutral is a little tough to engage

So when the chain wears it stretches and cannot be adjusted properly. Remedy is to buy a new one but some unscrupulous people would just cut a few links out to stop it jumping off the sprockets
According to Partzilla should be 520 x 108 links look here

If it calls for a 102 link, there is no way you will get a 96 link chain on, Alpha sports call for a 520-961 chain, not sure what 961 means, but I would think 96 link is correct.
I always order chains a few links longer and cut to fit.

Also if a PO has put smaller sprockets on they might have shortened the chain to suit.

Yeah I think the biggest issue is there is no direct answer on what the chain should be. Some sites say 102 is stock others say 96 ands others say 108. I guess no one knows this bike well :(

I think you'll find 102 is correct. They are made this long so owner can cut to length depending on sprocket sizes. 96 is the right number.they sell shorter lengths for smaller bikes or larger rear sprockets.ie.41t front on T250 might be 96 links----51t front on trials bike might be 100 links.
