Gt550 exhaust gaskets

Post by SuzukiSmith »

I'm getting ready to put my stock exhaust back on my 74 GT550. The question I have is is there a certain amount of header pipe that should be sticking in the head beyond the threaded exhaust clamp at the ports as to crush the gasket? I have looked and can't find any info on this. Thanks in advance!

Hi. Just make sure there are no old gaskets in the cylinder then just put a new one in. Unwind the clamp so that when the exhaust is tightened down a 2mm gap is left to allow the downpipe to flex when the motor is running. The reason I say to check the old gasket has been removed is because when compressed and with heat and carbon they are very good at disguising themselves :D

Awesome! Thank you! I did remove the old gaskets and cleaned all the exhaust ports. It no longer looks like the inside of a BBQ grill.

Also what is the torque spec for the exhaust flange bolts?

As far as I am aware there is no torque setting for these bolts. Just apply some copper grease and do them up tight a little at a time swapping sides so the clamp pulls in square. Don't over tighten just as tight as you dare. :D
After running the bike for a while, just go back and check they are still tight.
