just purchased another fuel tank but it has some spots of rust on the inside. I know this has been posted up before, but II'm trying to clean it and get the rust out. Has anyone tried molasses and water? and did it work? Or has anyone else have any ideas?

Back in the early spring I used apple cider vinegar to remove rust in the GT185's tank. I let it sit in there for 3 days then spilled it out and made a mixture of baking soda and water to neuralize the acid. I guess I didnt make it strong enough as the tank semi-flash rusted inside. Besides that the vinegar did a nice job of removing scale, supposedly it doesn't hurt paint and you can dump it in the ground since it's bio friendly. I'll re-do mine again this winter/spring and try to improve what I did. BTW apple cider vinegar around here is $3.79 a gallon.

Flywheel, invest in some POR-15. It goes right over that 'flash rust' and seals it forever. Just make sure the tank is TOTALLY dry before coating with the POR-15. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on it after final rinse for a couple of days. Remove the petcock and make a block off plate (or pipe plug). Dump in the POR -15 and cap the filler neck with cellophane and a rubber band. Now roll and tilt the tank around and around for about 10 minutes. Remove the petcock plug and drain the excess sealer. Rock the the tank back and forth to get all the excess out you can. Grease the plug or 6mm screws and screw them in while the sealer is still wet. Let sit overnight and the go at it with the heat gun again. A day of that and 2 days air dry. You'll never even think about the tank again. I have done 3 tanks this way and the results are / were outstanding. Looks like brand new metal inside and it will NEVER rust or peel off.
There is no need to buy the POR-15 tank sealer kit. You just need the pint can of sealer. Remove the rust with your own methods. Neutralize and rinse well and by all means get it dry before sealing. When you are certain it is totally dry, dry it some more.
