GT750A /B Gas cover latch repair

I posted this once before, but it was a long time ago. When I was rebuilding my GT750B I ran across this problem. The lock latch retainer was toast. Half gone and the rest rusty brittle. After a search, I found out this part is not available separately. What to do? With lid and lock in hand I went up to Ace Hardware. Started searching through drawers and found this.
Instant fix and about 15 times stronger than the OEM clip. I have a pic of it installed somewhere. If I find it I will post -- if I can edit.

I have an excellent, well stocked Ace Hardware around the corner from my house. There are a few things on my bike from them -- even more in the house. My Ace even carries JIS fasteners.

Wow, thanks for posting that. Mine did the same thing when I removed it before paint. I never did fix it, thinking I'd never find a replacement for it. It's holding though, with one finger. If you get a chance someday, measure the thickness in millimeters.

Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s used that same style of oem clip for the gas tank lid lock.
