Now we are getting somewhere. The side cover is clearly a GT750. AFAIK, it won't fit any other motor. It must be a very early style. Parts books show one part for JKL and another for MA, but we have seen that for other parts too, so that doesn't give us a whole lot of insight.
My guess is that any oil mist or oil just drained back into the inner cover, so it wasn't a problem. Later covers have a small weep hole to allow oil out and that acts as an indicator of leaks in the shaft.
I'd replace the clutch pull rod and outer seal and get a new cover if possible. The reason I say that is because water damaged the lever arm and that means that water got into that small cavity and it must have then dripped into the inner cover. We know that the cavity doesn't tend to fill with oil or oil mist because if it did,m that lever arm would not have rusted - unless the bike was left for years in a place where it got wet but never ran. That would account for the condition.

Ian, I was just looking through your fieldguide masterpiece on the Buffalos. I see in there you mention there is a difference between the early clutch covers and later ones (that had kick start embossed on them). The early one pictured has the peg as opposed to the hook and hole in my one. Care to express an opinion on the changes and when this might have occurred? Or am I being a bit anorakish now

I have seen the clutch side covers from the early J's that had a drain in the bottom of that area to let water that got in a place to run out . The holes ( slots ) you see should exit out the bottom . As long as the small oil seal in the round side cover leaks it will allow oil to run out the bottom of the side cover . So if the end of the clutch release is chewed up that has to be fixed before replaceing the seal or it will just chew up the new seal .
the older i get the faster i was

As you were feeling a bit anorakish there Mike there were also two styles of the small round cover for the clutch engine cover itself.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Aaarggh ... you're doing my head in now Allan. I may just have to start an entire thread on the changes to the clutch covers and what numbers they came in. Plus a forum to speculate on why they made each change. All in the interests of having that totally correct restoration

But only 1 shown in the parts lists for the round outer cover and they only list 2 inner covers JKL and MAB. So it would seem that they upgraded some parts early on and never spoke about the old ones again.Suzsmokeyallan wrote:As you were feeling a bit anorakish there Mike there were also two styles of the small round cover for the clutch engine cover itself.
