T500 oil pump output vs lever travel chart

Post by craddojc@yahoo.com »

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have this chart? I am looking for the curve where pump output in cc/minute, or cc/hr, is plotted against control arm lever angle for a given speed.

I already have the Suzuki SB from 1976 that shows pump outputs, but the SB only has outputs for pump lever fully closed and lever fully open. I suspect T500 pump output isnt linear with lever travel. I found the output vs lever position chart for the T250 and T350, and it isnt linear.

I am looking to reduce the smoke from my bike at freeway speeds. The T500 design was from the late 60's. With the better oils we have today, the T500 doesnt need as much oil. My goal is to reduce output to something more like the GT550, which is about 18% less, by limiting lever travel

Thanks very much,
Jeff in Colorado

Different brand/types of oil also apparently affects smoking.
If my memory is correct, it was quite noticeable back in the 70s & 80s.

Not sure about today — I just stick with a good oil that claims to be low smoke.

Jabcb-

Im sure your right about 70's oil. For last 15 years, I've used Pennzoil 2T Outboard motor oil. I think is a pretty good oil- opened up my T500 last year at the 40,000 mile mark and everything was great except for the crank seals (they were 50 years old and totally shot).

There are a lot of 2T oils in the bike shops for $8-$20 per QUART, and I hate to spend that without knowing if theres any improvement. Today's Pennzoil 2T is way better than the stuff from the 60's and early 70's when the T500 was built, even tho its only about $22 per gallon, but there is that smoke problem.

The Suzuki data I have showed that Suzuki used ~20% less oil output on the GT550, which is a bigger motor from the late 70's. So 2T oil must have improved over just over just a few years, and 2T oil is probably way better today. Thats why Im thinking its safe to run the T500 with 20% less oil output to reduce smoke with Pennzoil
