gears t500

started splitting the engine on my 1971 t500. getting the oil seals replaced and increase the oil to 1400. i was told that the bike has 8000mls and that is on the speedo, not much of a bike mechanic so i will put up the photo's of the gears .any advice on condition appreciated.steve

It's kind of hard to tell from your pictures, they're a little fuzzy. It's usually fourth and fifth gears that wear out. Look for pitting on those gears, it's always on the counter shaft side. They usually start to wear in the middle of the tooth. Compare those teeth to the other gears and it should give you an idea if they are OK, all of the gears should have even wear. Indications of wear would be that the hardened part of the steel has come off and shows up as being real shiny, and the middle of the gear tooth starts to show a depression.
