I just got another Water Buffalo in. Its a 72 GT750. Everything is good but the transmission wont shift. Even when rocking the rear wheel with chain connected
I took the left cover off of the shift shaft and there is no corrosion.
It moves slightly but wont shift gears.
Is there an issue behind the clutch on the right side of the engine or what do you think needs done?
Is this common?
HELP!!??!?!?!?!

Does the engine turn over or is it stuck? It's not unusual to be impossible to shift until the motor is rotated a few times to allow the dogs to engage. If that's the issue, turn it over and try while it's moving/rotating.

You haven't really provided much to go on - you say the engine is free, so you can kick it over ? Was it sold to you as a runner ? If not, you say the engine does turn over, but is it stuck in gear or in neutral ? The clutch actually is working ? Was there oil in the tranny ? Have you changed the oil ? And if so was there no sign of bad news (bits of metal) in the oil ?
Assuming that the tranny actually isn't broken, or the clutch isn't glued solid from sitting, then sometimes what happens is people pull the neutral plug (the one that's angled) thinking its the oil drain plug. There is a spring loaded stopper plug in there which will fall out and if they put it back together incorrectly, or mix up the oil drain plug for the neutral plug then the tranny won't shift. Might be worth looking at - without more information its tough to offer more .

Good point Ian. I'd look there first. If the spring and detent plunger are in there, the next step would be to take the clutch apart. Even if you feel 'action' in the clutch lever - if the plates aren't separating, the tranny is not free to move. I find it highly unlikely that the transmission is the problem as they were a bit of an overkill to start with. Of course the PO could have down shifted into 1st at 70 mph, but in that case they would still be picking up the pieces.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Re: 1972 GT750 Transmission is locked up HELP!!!!!!???
I just dropped the oil out of both plugs.
Spring and plunger came out when dropped the plug. Oil was good.
It now shifts....
But, stuck it all in with the plunger, spring, and plug. Now wont shift again after put back together.
Does it need to be in a gear or neutral when putting it all together????? Is there some trick.......this sucks. Other than this issue this bike will be restored. Got all new parts to slap on it.

I've had that same problem previously - could be a couple of things. Try a different stopper from one of your other spare engines. It doesn't make sense as supposedly the two different ones are supposed to be interchangeable (25351-30000 , 25351-30010) but that was the fix for me. Also be sure the tranny is actually in neutral (not a false neutral) when you put it back together.
