Hey guys,
Went out to the shed last night to sort through my boxes of bike, noticed that some mad bastard has gone through the entire loom of my T500R, cut out the plugs and soldered the wires together.
Is this an accepted mod? Anyone know a good reason for it? Should I travel back in time and punch this person?

I can understand that someone would do it, but I don't think it is the best modification. I have had two connectors melting and stopping me from going any further. Both times was in Germany quite far away from home, luckily I always bring with me a bag of mixed items so I was able to cut out the melted connector and splice the wires.
Both the times was on my GT750, never had that problem on the T350, maybe because I cleaned and inspected all the connectors on that one, or maybe the generator on that one just isn't up to the task of melting anything...
Planing to replace the wiring on the GT750, think you should considder the same, would probably be cheaper than to source new connectors.

Yeah, I plan to go to a modern regulator/rectifier, LED indicators/taillight, electronic ignition etc, so it will probably be worthwhile rewiring everything while I'm going. Hopefully I can sort out the factory spaghetti inside the headlight bucket as well - surely most of it is unnecessary.

you can get a nice reasonably priced solid state regulater/rectifier combo at.

In general soldered connections should be avoided. The solder wicks up the wires, and creates stiff sections next to pliable sections, and you will have them fatigue, crack, and you'll have broken and intermittent connections.
