Starter Motor Cover Gaskets

Post by oldjapanesebikes »

I'm looking at having a few of these made - a sample is on the right in the photo below, and a typical old one is shown on the left. Anyone else interested ? At the moment it looks like they will come in at between $12 CDN and $15 CDN each + shipping - so perhaps around $20 CDN delivered to most places. The material is a granulated neoprene (standard automotive gasket material) and is not adhesive, so you would need to use some double sided tape or liquid adhesive.

Just PM me if interested. 8)

Hey, it's pretty, but the two pics just aren't the same so it might not fit.
It's obvious that the first pic is for a flange with bent sides and not as 'clean cast' as the second gasket would suggest. #
Maybe a redesign is necessary here?
We are looking at 70's approximate technolology here, not this modern stuff.

The problem with that oem design was it crushed it to distortion. I gave up on that old gasket and placed small washers on the inside of the cover by the holes to 'float it' off the engine case so it could be tightened securely and not vibrate against the lip surrounding the cover underneath.
Ian if you make some of those I'll buy at least three from you. I''ll still use my washer concept to save the new gasket from being crushed when the cover is tightened.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Allan, I like that idea. Maybe you could get some short lengths of tube from a model store to use as spacers/dowels.

For allowing the new gasket to work and use the washer idea, a slight mod will have to be done to the washers OD, luckily its a 5mm size so most washers in that size generally have a small OD already.
What you want is to have them inside the gaskets hole sections which will have to be punched out just enough for some altered washers to fit with a smaller OD. They also have to be just a bit thinner so you crush the gasket just enough and then tighten onto the washers thickness.
Suzuki did not think the design through on the cover, instead of simply glueing the gasket on and then distorting the covers holes and the gasket when its tightened, they should have pressed the holes so they have an internally facing lip simulating the washers thickness, then fit the gasket so its around the small hole protrusions. This way it seals when tightened and does not distort the cover or gasket.
Richard the little collars you propose to make would have to be steel as brass or aluminum is a bit too soft in the size needed, unless you can find some thicker walled tubing to use in the softer material.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

I have them on fleabay, but if anyone on this board or or the KC board in the UK want one, they can be had for a bit of a discount. Either check my web site (http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) or email me directly. 8)
