T500 transmission wanted

Post by Fritz500 »

Some time ago I bought a transmission for my 500J from a fellow forum member - my 4th and 5th gear were looking a bit worn. Transmission due to be fitted after I get the cylinders re-bored, the crank seals replaced and the engine bead blasted. All happening this and next week. Yippee!

I'm also in need of a transmission for my 500K as 4th and 5th gear are showing signs of wear. If anyone has a transmission from a post gearbox modded bike that is in good nick I'd be interested. I'm looking in a few places (eBay and local rag).

Any leads greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I saw that one. The quoted engine number is 10736. Does that sound right?

I'm chasing down another lead...

Cheers

Actually, it's a Cobra engine. And, if you look at the transmission, the shafts are early style.

They have bushings slid onto the counter shaft between the gears.
BTW, the crank out of that engine has earlier style rods with weaker big ends.

I'm still chasing a low mileage tranny in good condition. I had a deal for one go sour just recently. PM me if you can provide any leads.

Thanks

Even a post 73 will not guarantee you a decent tranny, I have 2 74 motors with low mileage (under 18K), both had the factory dam and both had 5th gear shot, one of them also had 4th gear gone.

Oh great.

I want good news, not facts... :(

I think I'm playing the risk game. I assume a post 73 one will be OK but I always ask the seller to verify it is OK in writing. Anyone who won't send me a super large format photo of 4th and 5th doesn't get my money. Few eBay sellers agree.

The really annoying thing is I passed up on two 74/75 T500s that were el cheapo (absolute give away prices) because I didn't have the room for two more bikes. Next time I'll grab a bargain and store it on the roof or whatever...

Cheers
