Rusty Chrome

Post by speedblock »

I'm in the middle of a restore / restomod on my "saved from the boneyard" 75 GT750 - I'll be posting some pics soon. While I am powder coating or painting all of the non chrome parts, some of my original chrome parts have "character" and are decent enough for the level of work I am doing - at least that's where my thoughts are today.

I can tell from reading and browsing here the last few months that you guys are light years ahead of me in restoration skills. What's the preferred method for cleaning up lightly rusted chrome and then maintaining it? For example, my rear fender is dent free and only very lightly rusted in small spots. On other bikes I have done I've glass beaded parts, evapo rusted them, tried cola and aluminum foil, fine steel wool, etc. When I'm done I usually coat the part with WD40 every so often to keep the rust away. Anyone got a better approach? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Chris

Chris the only things you could do, you did already. Some #0000 steel wool to clean it up then applying a good chrome polish and some WD to keep it under control is about it.
The next step is to re-chrome the item, which depending on where you are located can be an issue or not.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

If you are going for a do-up you have to do it right,at a price, or you will look at it in the future and find things that will always bug you.I could have done the chrome cleaning bit but spending money and time on powder coating and paint to have the best then settling for second best in the chrome department always results in a second best finnish.everybody wants people to admire their work but nobody wants to hear-nice job, pity about the chrome-.you have to spend money but you will always smile at the end product.look at these and you know which will look the best on your bike.looking forward to pictures.

No7 chrome polish (now called No7 chrome and metal polish) works wonders. Take a look at these pics.

The wheels original condition:

I decided to replace the spokes as they are impossible to restore. After I unlaced the wheel, I worked it over with No7 chrome polish. Hard to believe it's the same wheel.

Got the new spokes, laced it up and here I am truing it back up. Looks NEW! I polished the hub too as you can tell. This was done with fine grit paper and scotch-brite

I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

LOL that was cute.

I was going to ask you what brand you use, 'cause I really do clean my jewelry with toothpaste.

Ace hardware. If they don't have it, they can order it for you.

About half an hour. It's an abrasive polish (much more than tooth paste). Takes rust off in a jiffy. The results probably would not have come out this well if the spokes had been in my way.
