Hi, Is it possible to remove the lock & internals from a GT gas cap to enable it to be rechromed?

Thanks

I'm sure it is, i have one to look at eventually so you may have forced me to have a closer look at it.

Well so far I have got the spring loaded & rubber seal part out,
its held into the cap by 4 clips that are sprung against the inside
of the cap.

I just need to get the latch & lock part out

Mines the older non locking type and i have no locking ones to examine so i cant tell you about that version.

I've taken them apart, there are two spring-clips, one on either side of the latch (if I remember correctly). They're a bitch to put back together if you get something turned the wrong way. Take it apart slowly and take some pictures. The cylinder can be put in the wrong way, and it won't work.

Good luck,

Lane

rngdng +1.
Yep, they will come apart. I have a locking style 550 cap with the front tabs wrecked so I took it apart for spares.....that hopefully I'll never need.

Mark, I'd take it to a chrome place with a good reputation and let them have a look at it so they can give you a price. You can also check out display smaples of their work to see if the work meets YOUR expectations.
With chroming, the preparation of the piece is EVERYTHING. It pretty much determines how the piece will look when it's finished.....assuming the chromers know what they are doing.
If YOU do the prep work then all bets are off as to the quality of the final job.
If THEY do the prep work then THEY are resonsible for the quality of the finished piece. This option will cost more....but the final result SHOULD be worth it.
Chroming is something that you have to talk about with guys in your area who do restos and find out who THEY used for any chroming......and which shop(s) to avoid.
Classic Motorcycle Mechanics is a good reference source for chromers that CMM have used on their projects. The CMM guys usually pull no punches about their happiness (or not) with the various outside vendors they use on their resto porjects. Lucky you being in the UK can use the SAME outside vendors....for chroming or anything else, of course.
