72 GT550 paint questions

Post by jabcb »

Anyone have the modern paint code for Aztec Gold?

Does the Reproduction Decals kit provide instructions on exactly where to place the masking for the painted black stripes, and the white stripes?

But do those old paint codes map into anything modern that’s useful for my painter?

A well known tip is to get a Nos part and take it to the paint shop. Most of them have a machine which can analyze pigments and match it exactly.

Have a look at Canaletto's paint tent!
Candy gold page 3 on. He's currently doing my GT550J that colour.

It also has a few examples of what passes for British humour. If you don't understand, just go to the next page or look at the pics!
The stripes are painted on by the way.

Tank is paint code 571, which is a combination of 176 / Aztec Gold and 019 black.
Turns out the 71 T350R has the same color. My 71 T350R has a body set that I got from Paul Miller so I should have a correct sample.

So I have the paint sample covered. Does anyone know about the Reproduction Decals kit?

The Reproduction Decals kit showed up today. Includes instructions on how to apply them but there are NO instructions on WHERE to apply them.

I have a good tank that was repainted by the PO, so I can’t use the tank as a guide.
An alternative is to get a junky cheap tank with original paint to use as a guide.

Any suggestions or info on EXACTLY WHERE the decals go?

Like that?
That's the tank that will be going on the 550J soon.

Or these?

The top right pic was the day I bought the bike in August 1972, so that's as close as you'll see to a proper decal set.
Yes the tank is dented on a couple of them, after the accident, I had a disc kit fitted and didn't have a new tank.
I took the disc off a couple of weeks later and put a 4LS back on as they are a better brake. Then fillered the tank and painted it a different colour!

Looking at the old brit bike in the background. Was that yours too? It certainly looks unique.
