Oil Pump Over haul

Post by abs268 »

Hi Guys, new to the forum and would ask for help with my 1972 GT380 which is leaking 2 stroke oil, can someone point me in the direction in the forum that may show how to do the job and where I might get the gaskets etc.

Welcome to the forum lots of good help on here
http://www.pinkpossum.com/GT750/Oilpump.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This will help you understand the pump although its about the 750 the basics are the same.
These pumps are very reliable and dont often go wrong but as Jabcb says we need to know where it leaks?

That's a great link, but where can you get replacement oil seals for these things? I would like to do a strip and rebuild of my own gt380 pump too, just to be thorough. So I will be watching this post with interest.

I am having trouble pin pointing it but it is dripping down near the center stand, I have only just got the bike and the previous owner most definitely over filled the transmission which I have since drained.

It may actually be leaking from the connection between the oil tank & hose. The oil then runs down the hose & makes a mess of everything.

So we are sure its 2T engine oil and not 20\50 transmission oil?
If it is 2T there are several places it could leak. First place to Check is the oil sight window in the oil tank. They can sometimes weep from there. Then check the integrity of the connection of the tank to pump hose are the clamps good and tight? Then where the feed pipe banjo is bolted to the pump ensure there is a good gasket washer either side and the bolt is tight(be careful too tight and it will strip the thread) then ensure the pump is tight down on the oil feed pipe spider there are 3 phillips head bolts. The problem with oil leaks is its difficult to trace the source as the oil will run down and drip away from the leak.
Have a look here it may help

With the engine cold, spray it down with brake cleaner. Let it dry and dust it with baby powder. Let it sit overnight and check for leaks tomorrow. Oil leaks will show up in the baby powder as dark spots! Do the bottom of the oil tank, the hose down to the pump and the pump too.
If nothing shows up overnight cold, run the bike until it's warm/hot on the cener stand and have a look for leaks.

Spray brake cleaner on your butt first?
