Engine builder needed, South Yorkshire UK

Post by RUSSELL14 »

Hi can anyone recommend an engine builder in the South Yorkshire area (that's UK)
I've got a couple of GT 185 motors to do.
Cheers.

Hello Russell,

I would recommend Mike Hawthorne in Doncaster (I hope that is South Yorkshire (ish)). He is usually found building race engines but I could ask him if he is interested in a couple of GT185 engines.

What level of re-build did you have in mind. Just a mechanical build or a full restored to concourse cosmetic condition. A consideration to bear in mind, will you source and supply the engine parts ?.

Cheers Geoff

I'm in South Yorks, but I do my own! They are quite straightforward.
What needs stripping/rebuilding? All the lot or just the crank?
There's a place in Liverpool area that does cranks - did my mate's 185 crank while he waited.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Hi thanks for the reply's.
The engine is stripped and I have had the crank rebuilt by Grampian in Liverpool.
The cases barrels and head have been cleaned and blasted.
All case and cover bolts and screws re-plated.
New gasket set.
New oil seals for clutch, kick start ect.
Any other parts required I can source as needed.
It really just needs assembling by someone who knows what their doing.
I have to admit that person is not me ! I did consider doing it myself but I
have no knowledge of engine building so will happily pass it on to someone
with the proper experience. I'm in Barnsley so easy enough to get engine to
Doncaster if Mike would be able to do it, if so could you give me an idea of what
it would cost.
Regards Mark.

Hello Mark,

I will contact Mike Hawthorne and ask if he can help you. If he can I'm sure he would have no issues with making the re-build a tutorial for yourself at the same time. If all the necessary parts are in hand re-assembly would likely take no more than hour to complete (+ cup of tea and banter time of course :D )

I'll get back to you.

Cheers Geoff

Hi Mark,

The Suzuki engines on our bikes are all pretty simple to work on. A friend took a bet he could re-assemble a T500 engine blindfold, and won  . I'm sure Mike would not mind you watching the re-build, if fact he'll probably have you doing half of it :D .

Cheers Geoff
