Suzuki 2 Strokes

I was having trouble fitting the inlet air boot on the 1972 J I just finished, and then realised what the problem was. The inner sleeves had come loose. Anyone else seen this ?



So when I tried to slip the end over the carb inlet, it was just pushing the sleeve back into the boot. When checking the other two, the middle one was half loose and easily pulled out. I suppose after 45 years or so, glue can start to fail. So I pulled out my spare - and found on it all three were loose. This is a photo with all three sleeves removed from the spare inlet air boot.



I've tried some silicon, and also some Gorilla glue - so far the Gorilla glue is a bust. I was thinking of model aircraft super glue, but the neck has to flex as well as stretch slightly , so I don't think that anything that sets hard will work. And no - pods are not an option for me. Just personal choice as I don't like how they look.

Suggestions appreciated.

Rubber contact adhesive like evostick?

I'd also try tire/tube patch adhesive. Its made to glue rubber patches to rubber inner tubes. So it should work.

Goop will work. I have repaired lots of rubber stuff with goop.

Thank you for the suggestions - I have a couple of options I'm testing and will let folks know how they work.

How critical are these horns inside the boot? I don't have the boot in front of me and haven't seen it for a while now but it seems to me they aren't in the boot. I need to double check this.

OJB, how are they supposed to sit in the boot? I am guessing the very front edge of the horn should be flush with the very front edge of the boot, so that the clamp secures the boot, and horn onto the carb mouth?

Correct - basically without the bell the ID is a bit too big on the boot for the inlet bell of the carburettor. I suppose also that the horns help manage the airflow into the inlets. Goop seems to be working so far as an adhesive.

Right, I was assuming the same. I just went out to the shed to check, I must have misremembered because my boot has the 3 horns intact.

Goop is one of my favorites. Good for many things, as it sticks to nearly everything.
