I always put the bike together enough to see that the motor runs well and then do the rest. My neighbors think it's funny to see me ride a bike down the street with only a gas tank on it and a bath towel for a seat.

Piston/rings for GT500 Grooved or Not grooved NOT compatable

Post by Admin »

I baught extra oversize pistons.

.50 with rings. they dont have grooves and the rings are smooth (no groove)

1.0 with rings. They have grooves and the rings have a groove as well.

My GT500 was made Oct 1975 and is regostered as a 1976 GT500. I had original pistons and rings with Grooves.

Do I have to use matching pistons? Grooved or smooth sets?? Can I use smooth rings in grooved pistons or grooved rings in smooth pistons??

I have ordered standard size rings but havent recieved them yet. I have original pistons with grooves in the bike now. I am concerned that I will need grooved rings for the original pistons?? but if I recieve smooth rings? what then

Thanks lots for the help and info. The Forum is a huge help!! Dofin

paint exhaust

Post by Admin »

I use Muffler Black thats the name and comes from the John Deere Tractor shop. You clean the pipes, put on two lite coats then dry. Run them on the bike, heat will set the paint. Its not permanent but repaints really well. The only problem I have had, some times if paint cans are on the shelf to long for some reason the paint will turn white! at the very hot spots. It wierd but just paint over it. Dofin

GT500 cylinders

Post by Admin »

are the cylinders on pre 75' different than after 75'? I notice the part numbers are different between 72' parts list and 76'.

I almost purchased a set with pistons, because I checked the part numbers I didnt bid for them.

Did I screw up/?? Dofin

Yes, they are different, but like the pistons, they are also interchangable. The porting was changed (milder) when they went to the longer intakes.

You could (can) use the older ones.

Post by Admin »

I see, so the porting was changed a bit, but same Cyl.s The cyl.s on Ebay went for $60 with pistons, wrist pins and bearings! arrrg I hope the new owner will take good care of them!

Lane are you going to Deals Gap this year? If I get my RD400 done thought I wuould like to take that if not the GT gets to go. i havent been befor but sound GREAT. The ride is whats improtant!

Been to Speed Week a few times a long time ago but not much fun just sitting around watch the Trailer Queens. Much more fun when you can connect to some riders. USA2strokers have been lots of help also.

Paint colour clarification

Post by Admin »

Hi Guys, As you may have noticed, I'm about to have my T500 painted into Candy Lavender (from it's current, unoriginal deep purple). In one of the parts manuals, I noticed a colour guide. This lists the white on the tank as "Egret White"and the Candy Lavender as such. Now, along side these there are some numerals described as "colour number". For the white it is "189"and the candy is "216". My question is: Are these numbers of help when selecting the shade to use, do they relate to anything that's current or can they be used any way to get a good approximation of the original colour?
Many thanks for any clarification, Mike

They don't exist. I have never found any, anywhere. The ones from the 750s are close, but the groove on the inside is different. You might be able to modify some to work.

Try some of the aftermatket fork covers for older dirt bikes. They come in all sizes. I've found some for a XXXXXX that fit other stuff just dandy!

Hmmm, Guess I will try the GT750 route hope one of you might have a best year for the modification?

also get measurements and wander around the other bike shops and check out other dust covers. if anyone has ever done this and found a match PLEASE let me andthe rest of us know and save me/us some time. I will follow up if I find something useable. Dofin

From 75-77 they were the same. That's what you want. They could also be GT550, and possibly 380. Honda 750 also might work...some years had 35mm tubes.

Good luck,
Lane
