Crankcase capacity on 73 T500

Post by Admin »

From my reading; The crankcase oil capacity of the T500 was increased in 1973 from 1200 CC to 1400 CC. My Feb 1973 built bike has 1200 stamped near the crankcase fill port.

Does my bike have the larger crankcase capacity or not?

Thanks.

Not unless someone has added the "Rubber Dam" in the case. You have the original 1200cc capacity, if you split the cases add the rubber dam who Jugs has on this site.

For 73 they still said 1200cc and merely had a sticker over the case.
This sticker easily fell off.

T500M speedo glass replacement

Post by Admin »

My speedo glass (clear plastic lens) is cracked and needs to be replaced. Can I just buy a good used case and replace it with the innards from my speedo?

Yes
That is an easy procedure. My cable rubbed a a ugly spot in my case, and I replaced the inners with no problems. Nice time to clean odometer #s off too. I have speedo cases but I have to dig them out.

I see a recent article in one of the English Classic mags where some guy (John Storrie) recommends putting 1500cc of 20w50 in all T500s. He says it ensures the layshaft gets lubricated. But won't that just result in 100cc spilling over the dam and going places it really shouldn't???

Be careful.. It was only on the last lot of 1973 models that the oil dam wall was raised.

And yes adding 1500ml of oil will just overflow into the clutch housing.

Argo,
How is the restoration of the T500 coming along? Have those new bearings worked out well for the motor? How do the local people react to a T500 on the roads?
Regards

Hi Mike,

unfortunately my T500K is not on the road yet. The main problem of delay has been connecting rod which has had little rust on big end bearing surface. Finding new rod took 4 months ;( For the sake got rebuilt crank back yesterday. All other components are nearly ready to mount ...

But I'm riding my T500J http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/2eyj-j-jpg.html
and most of the people are very surprised that 35 year old bike is still running and accelerates nearly as well than modern ones ;)
Furthermore an Estonian motorcycle magazine is interested to bring a story about my old japanese bikes. I just got the information, that besides my T500s I own the only TX750 Yamaha in Estonia. Not bad ;)

I hope you and your T500 are doing well!

Cheers,
Argo

My '72 T500 has different carbs than the one shown on fee-bay. Mine has a rectangular bit on the top where the cable goes in and has rubber boots.

My J has the carb cap with the lip which holds the rubber cover.
