Steering stem bearings

Post by markj »

I had purchased a set a while back from Partsnmore. They don't come with dust seals. I can reuse the old top cap which should help keep debries out. But the bottom is another story - I guess I could make something that would act as a seal but I'm not sure what. Anyone ever deal with this?

That's just it. There was a dust cap on the top but on the bottom it looks like the lower race sort of acted as a seal. I've seen some kits that sell upper a lower seals but haven't seen them sold seperately. I could just order a new kit but I'd hate to not use the one I have.

oh yes, I understand, water do not enter but must exit.
You must put fat and put a "top" witch prevent water come into.

That makes sense. So I guess I just need to seal the top and make sure there is something that keeps dirt out of the bottom but still allows for water drainage should some get in there.

When I put tapered bearings in my GT550 I took a piece of safety wire and threaded it through the center of some 1/4 inch braided nylon rope. Then I wrapped it around the gap at the bottom tight enough to keep most of the dirt out but not tight enough to bind the steering. It's been on a couple years, it still looks good, I will probably repack the bearings this winter and replace it.

Called Allballs and turns out their kit does come with upper and lower seals. He's gong to send them to me for free so long as I use their kits in the future. No problem there!
