What have I missed?

Post by Hush »

To get my rebuilt GT550 L running I fitted new but Chinese points, they got the bike running but not quite as well as I would like. A friend sent me his complete points plate with good quality points and condensers which came off his perfectly running GT550 as he had just fitted electronic ignition. So I fitted the new plate, regapped the points and found the timing to be spot on for my bike too but knowing this couldn't be I rechecked the timing and yep still right on the money. Fired up the bike and it ran like a bag of shaken rocks! Rechecked the points gaps, rechecked the timing, fired up and still horrible, in fact when I pulled the plugs one was carbon black and two were wet (oil/petrol?) did the old touch test on the pipes and only the center one was hot? What did I do wrong?

With the plug sitting on the head so you can see the spark, make sure that manually operating the left points fires the left plug. Repeat for center & right.

Cheers I will try that. This morning I had another go at timing the beast but it just got worse. Can a GT550 engine run backwards? It seems to fire backwards, it won't run, just makes really bad noises and fires the kick starter back at me like it hates me! Before this the kicker would stay down as I fitted too longer holding pin on the other end of the kick starter shaft and was waiting for it to wear down, now it snaps up at me like an old Triumph! I have def done something wrong?

Thanks JABCB for stopping me overthinking this too far, checked spark and was sparking on wrong plug, swapped 1 & 3 and she fired right up. See this is why I need to be a member of this site lol.
