Jim,

I have copies of the calculations and graphs that Adam had done for the original T500 fork springs. Plus, I have some calculations that I did for different wire diameters. I can easily extend these calculations to cover different materials and wire diameters if anyone is interested.

I can scan any of this stuff and provide by e-mail to anyone interested. Just let me know your e-mail address.

Rebuilding shocks

Post by Admin »

does anyone know how to rebuild shocks? I won a pair off ebay and when I received them noticed one is covered in oil. The seller has been very helpful but doesnt know the brand for a seal kit. Figured at 13 1/2" they would be great for the new and improved frankenbike.

The problem is finding the rebuild parts. I have a set of TS400 shocks that can be taken apart (I have...) and I can't find the correct seals for them. They're a really odd size, 12.5X23X12.

Most shocks don't come apart. If there's a threadded plug around the shaft, they can be rebuilt, IF you can get the parts.

Kinda looks like a weld peeking out behing the spring there at the area where the shaft goes in,if so,then they're not serviceable.

Looks like a good set of springs though, don't chuck 'em.

For 100 bucks are so the Old Bike Barn/JCWhitney cheapy shocks work ok,Mine are pretty damn stiff for my T500 but they have the proper damping for the spring rate so the handling is world better than the OE shocks.

https://www.partsnmore.com/index-suzuki.htmLists them at 75 bucks,just doesn't show any for GT750's

Oh, you wanted to get the spring off? Sorry, I was thinking of taking the damper apart to replace the seals.

Tim, do you think your shock contact can get the weird-sized seals? I need a couple of 12.5X23X12's to rebuild the original TS400 shocks.

My T200 rear shocks have very rusty nasty springs. They need rechroming big time. What's the correct tool to use to compress the springs to remove the collar? You can bet I don't have one here, whatever it is. I know a car spring compressor would be too big, but is there anything out there for a bike?

I use four "S" hooks from the hardware store, and two turnbuckles, also from the hardware store. Put two s hooks at the top of the spring, and two at the bottom with the turnbuckles between them. Tighten away. In some cases (short shocks/springs) you may have to attach the turnbuckles and lower s hooks to a bar through the lower mounting hole.

It's a 3-4 dollar tool, and it ain't pretty, but it works.

If it can be done, Thermosman can get it done. Give them a call and I'm sure they can set you up or tell you where you need to go to get what you need.

Tapered bearing adjustment?

Post by Admin »

Changed my steering stem bearings to tapered roller style but now I've got a bit of a handling problem. At low speeds the bike has a "wiggle". I always seem to be working the handle bars back and forth at low speeds to keep my balance. Sort of reminds me of a 5 year old riding a bike for the first time without the training wheels!! Any ideas on the bearing adjustments? Should I preload them more than the old ball type? The bike handles fine at highway speeds, can ride forever with no hands, but at low speeds it's almost embarassing!!

GT750 wheel sizes

Post by Admin »

I have been playing with the idea of fitting either fatter 18inch alloy rims or GSXR 17" wheels to one or other of my project GT750s.

After pouring over tire manufacturers specifications and measuring all the wheels in my garage, my head was starting to hurt.

So I pulled all the dimensions and a few notes together and posted them on the GT triples board at:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/GT750/files/

The file is called wheel sizes.pdf and i have to admit that the conclusions were not what I expected or hoped for :(

If you notice any errors please let me know so I can correct them.

Cheers
