T500 motor and gear oil - differentiation and changing

Post by T500Newbie »

Hi all...

I've recently gotten my hands on a T500 which is now starting nicely (usually first kick) after a change of plugs.

A friend and I were about to do an oil change when we realised we don't understand the oil system, how to ascertain the levels and/or what plug drains what type of oil... and I don't want to end up getting the wrong oil into the wrong place.

It's a T500L so I think it's the first with the bigger crank case capacity... but that probably doesn't change how you're meant to view your oil level or which plug to drain from and where to refill into.

Could anyone give a really simple explanation of how to ascertain the gear oil level and how to drain it?

8) Hi,I know the capacity was raised for the T500 to 1400cc in 1974 T500L, due to concerns of lack of adequate gear lubrication,so it's a case of measure in 1400cc of oil 20w/50 motor oil & you'll be o.k. If you google ozebook gt500 you'll find all the stuff you need to know about the model
