Hi Guys,

Have removed the oil sight glass from my GT500 oil tank and purchased a new one.
The problem is the old one was so discoloured it was not possible to see that the glass is different top to bottom.
Can anyone advise which way up the site glass goes or does it not matter.
Outside and inside is obvious bit top to bottom is not.

Cheers bigmick49

 Hi,a quick look around the net, came back with nothing mentioned about the sight glass !
I take it that as long as everything lines up with the other parts,it shouldn't matter ?
Cheers,
Roger

Hi Roger,
I found nothing on the web either and I tend to agree that it probably does not matter but the inside of the sight glass has a strange profile that looks like it is meant to have a particular orientation.
I guess I will just install it and view the result with oil in it as its easy to rotate even when full of oil just by backing of the central screw a tad.

This is an old thread, but I'm regurgitating it as I'd like to solve this problem too.
My GT500 B oil tank sightglass leaks. I've tried 2 different o-rings, but it seems to me when I look at the sightglass assembly off the bike, viewed 'edge-on' that the tabbed metal plate would hold off the plastic sightglass away from the oiltank surface so that the o-ring wouldn't be squashed enough to seal.
I assume the metal plate goes on with the tab towards the top and obviously tab inward. The transparent plastic window has a strange shape moulded into it on the inside, like a sort of oval concave section. There's a small 'pip' on the chamfered edge, and 'Made in Japan' lettering on the edge opposite around the chamfered edge.
My instinct tells me the 'pip' should be at the top.
And what on earth is that little tabbed metal plate for? It seems to have no real purpose, I think I'll leave it out.
Does anyone have the correct size (OD ID and SECTION thickness) for the sightglass o-ring?

Been a *long* time since I had to assemble this, but I can answer one question you asked.

The metal plate is to give some visual backing, to contrast against the oil in the tank. Otherwise, it is all a dark void, and you still can't tell if there is oil up to the sight glass or not.

Also, there are x2 different sight-glass mouldings (just to confuse things further!)
Difference is on the internal face of the plastic.
