Thread repair in cylinders

Post by jaybob »

Hey Guys, I found out some time ago the PO of my bike had drilled out two of the exhaust bolt holes.

He didn't just go one size over but two to make it a little harder for me to correct the situation. Stock size is 8 X 1.25 and the current bolts are 10 X 1.5.

Well what I settled on is just about the best thing a guy could do in this situation.
Problem=Money
Apply Money=Problem solved
I bought a Time Sert Big Sert Kit. Bst thing I ever did. The procedure was simple and with the supplied pro grade tools made a hack like me look pretty good.

Yes I know my engine is GROSS!! Due also to the port spooging all over the place because the old head pipe was loose because the bolt hole was sloppy and then the bolt could not be tightened properly.

Here is the kit with a stock bolt and the offending oversizer

Here is the hole drilled out and then chamfered.

Threaded with the supplied tap.

Insert ready for installation.

And then The final result.

I also have a few inserts left over in case this happens again.

Helicoils are OK in my book for some repairs. In this case though it was best to spend a little more and get it done the best way I know of.

edited to add: I meant to put this in repair

Time-serts are great, but pricey.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Nice job, Jaybob.
Timeserts are the hot ticket, IMO. The techs at our shop have nothing else to use...at the insistence of the boss. He does NOT want any comebacks....and we've never had any in the 7 seasons I've worked there. I've seen Helicoils back out but the boss swears he's never had that kind of problem with the Timeserts.
Do it right.....or do it twice !!!

Ive never had a helicoil come back out in over 30 years of installing them and this is from the 6mm size up to the 12mm size.
That total of pieces fitted would easily add up to over a 200 helicoils on various customers bikes, cars, lawnmowers, generators and weed string trimmers.
timeserts are great too but ill use the helicoil first if its just a simple stripped hole.
Then again im only using the original 'helicoil' brand and not a similiar generic item.
I have however seen a few inserts people fitted come back out, especially the spark plug hole ones.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

I just wanted to check what the local price up here would be - do you have a part number for the kit ? Thx !

The kit I used was an extra large Big Sert kit because of how big my holes were already drilled
Part # 5812 8mm X1.25 Big Sert kit

If you wanted to repair a stripped out but smaller size same hole you should order:
Part#1812 8mm X 1.25 Time Sert kit.

I paid 75 and I repaired 2 holes. I have three inserts left over.
So I will put it at about 15-20 per hole.

I have to agree with Allan, I have never had a problem with a Helicoil - except in a spark plug hole where it doesn't belong.

I just got the price for this same BigSert kit here in Alberta - they want $182 + tax, or $191. That would be about $155 in USD, and by way of comparison an 8mm Helicoil kit is about $40 CDN locally.

These sorts of cross-border price differences are annoying, but common. I may have my brother in Delaware do some shopping for me ......................
