newtronics electronic ignition question for gt380

Hi
I have lost my original paper slip which came with the newtronics kits, already fitted to my gt380 and working very nicely ....er that is, before i took it all apart and did a rebuild.
Now, i can't remember the tuning procedure. I THOUGHT you had to get number one led and number three led on together, which meant you were at the precise firing point for number one pot. But i'm wondering if this is correct. Can someone please remind me what are the light(s) which need to be on for number one cylinder?
ALSO, when those correct lights are on, is the cylinder supposed to be at TDC or 2 degrees BTDC?
Also, can you also remind me the recommended spark plug for the gt380? I'm guessing it's an NGK BP5ES. I have BRs already in but these are resistor types, right?

Hi MJ, here are some instructions which might help you:

The correct spark plugs are NGK B8ES, or you can use the B8EGV platinum-point or B8EIX Iridiums. The Iridiums have a 5K ohm resistor in them so you would need to use non-resistor style plug caps.

The BP type you mention are "long nose" plugs and the 5 grade is way too hot ...

thanks for the advice about the plugs. But the link you sent actually omits to metion the three led light system and where exactly to place the 'fire' position.
maybe other members have some experience with the NewtronIcs system?

I believe that the system fires the plugs as the trigger light is uncovered ie the trailing side of the reluctor. That's when the appropriate LED lights up on the black box.
Each light comes on in turn. I don't think that two are ever lit at the same time - at least not on mine.

thanks tz. I'm wondering whether you have an older one as on mine for use two lights come on and if i remember correctly the exact firing moment is when one of them goes out. I think it's when number one and number two lights are lit up and THEN number one goes out. But i can't be sure.
I always thought it fired when the round disk covered the beam of light, rather than - as you say - when it leaves it.

Just a generel question regarding electronic ignition..
Does any of these advance the ignition timing through the rpm's?

Only the digital CDI like Ignitech. Simple systems are fixed and that's OK for the limited RPM range we use. In theory we could use more advance at lower revs but if you never had you don't miss it.

I have no idea how old this one is. It's possible that they changed but it's easy to work out. Turn the motor over slowly with plugs out and grounded. Where does it spark - beginning, mid or leaving? Just watch for the spark and where the rotor is at and you will know for sure
