I thought I could just use these carbs out of the box. After reading a few threads I found out I needed to use a 120 main jet to go along with my Titan Performance expansion chambers and pod air filters. But is that the case for the new VM32 carbs or only if you are running stock carbs?

What other changes should I make on these carbs? I've read the carb settings from Ozebook but I don't think they pertain to these brand new carbs... Oze says the float height should be at 27.3mm but I believe my new VM32's are more like 22-24mm float height??

Purchased new from Dime City: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-c ... 1-028.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Out of the box jetting:
200 Main
35 Pilot
6DP17 Jet Needle
2.0 Air Jet
159 Q-6 Needle Jet

I can tell you this I am using 120 main jet and the right cylinder wasn't firing strong... only a little exhaust was coming out of the pipe. I put my hand a few inches away from the right cylinder exhaust and it was quickly covered in wet gas/oil mixture... I check my points and set timing... cut 1/2" off the spark plug cable and now it seems to be firing better. I get spark from both plugs. but had no idea it would get that wet coming out of the back of the exhaust chambers. While I was working on the bike, letting it idle, that wet gas/oil mixture would just drip out of he down pipes. Any ideas?

I don't really now why I wanted to get the new carbs... It was just one of those late night purchases you don't think much about and wake-up asking yourself "did I really just buy that?".

The suggestions we have made on jetting, do of course relate to the stock 32mm Mikunis Joe. Maybe these are not relevant for the new carbs you have purchased.
If I were spending my hard earned on new carbs, I think I would have opted for some big flatslides personally.

with all due respect to Dime City, that web page is total bollocks. Those carbs are fine but no real improvement over stock crabs apart from the weight and a different bowl vent system and teh fact that they are new and clean. They still need to be jetted to suit your bike.

I'd keep the main and pilot jets at this stage but Q-6 is very rich for the needle jets. Piston ported 2 strokes run rich at the bottom end, so you have to lean out the bottom-mid and richen the top end compared to a 4 stroke. I'd start with P-5 159 series needle jets and if they are not available you can probably use P-4s.

Paul at Titan may have other suggestions that are more suitable, but that should get it running. As he suggested, a set of 34mm TMXs or PWKs might have been a bigger upgrade for not a lot of extra drinking vouchers

Paul & Moto GP:

Thank you very much for your input. I will try the different size needles and if its not working I can always unload the carbs on eBay and buy the sliders you mentioned.

the new P5-159 Needle jets arrived today. I bought them off Amazon for about $12/each including shipping.

Just as a side note... I tried to remember the reason why I bought the new VM32 carbs in the first place... And all my problems came after I worked on the original stock carbs - I cleaned them, installed a rebuild kit and assembled them. I never had a problem with this bike when it was my daily driver and now I've got issues. I decided to just buy new carbs.

So, I looked at my old carbs a few minutes ago and realized that I had switched the slides when assembling the carbs after my rebuild! so stupid of me!!! So that could have been my carb issue all along. And to make it more embarrassing I noticed that I switch the slides on my new VM32 carbs!! double whammy!

so I've switched them back and this week I'll put the new needle jets in.. install new points, condensers and plugs. Should fix the problems with my bike which will lead to fixing some problems in my personal life too :)

I never would have known about the slides being installed backwards if it wasn't for this site. Thank You!

Don't beat yourself up Joe...you are not the first to do it, and wont be the last. Fingers crossed the bike runs strong with the old carbs reinstalled. I'm betting it will !

Is there any reason to switch back to the stock carbs? These new VM32's feel pretty good. I install the 120 mainjet and p5-159 needle jet. Also put in new plugs (B77HS) and condensers. I haven't started tuning the carbs but the bike fires strong and has a smooth throttle response (as smooth as the 2stroke can have). I've taken it out on a few very short test runs. It seems to perform better with the choke on both cylinders. One weird thing though... The right cylinder has a steady firing sound and the left feels like it hits harder. Is that normal? I do have the Titan Performance expansion chambers.
