GT550 carb leaking

Post by ctluba »

Hey guys, quick question for the mechanics. The tube that runs out of the bowl on my far left carb, to behind the engine and down by the swingarm pivot, is pissing out fuel like crazy. Bike is runnin fine and when I put the bike up on the a swingarm stand the gas stops. Isnt that something to do with the floats??? Dirty jet or something stuck??

Thanx for any info.

Sounds like you need to adjust the float level, possibly a stuck float or the needle valve might need replacing.

Check the needle and seat in the float bowl. Sounds like the needle is being held off the seat. And of course, check the float height while you're in there!

Thanx, I pulled the bowl off and the floats moved freely etc. It is still leaking out the over flow tube though. I didnt want to pull the whole carb rack out, but I guess I will have to, oh yeah, and have someone there that knows what to look for since I clearly dont :(

I'm not familiar with those carbs, so these comments are general. You are basically looking to determine if the needle and seat are leaking or if the drain tube has a crack in it.

Valve leakage can be debris, or a float that's the wrong level, or float that has sunk with a leak so it doesn't rise up and close the valve. When the change was sudden, it's often a piece of dirt trapped above the float needle.

If the float and valve are fine, then check the overflow tube for tiny cracks. You could pour some gas into the bowl and see if it leaks out as a simple test.

Ok, after taking this carb apart 3 times I figured out that the float had a tiny hole in it and was sunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant believe I didnt figure it out sooner. I kept shaking the float until all the gas was out. I just put a drip of solder on it and it is soaking in a cup of gas to see it that plugged the hole. I only used solder one other time in my life, so to say it was a challenge to get the drip on the hole and not ruin the rest of the solder on the float is an under statement!!!

Hopefully this did the trick or I will just try and scrounge up a set of floats.

Finally got her back together after a month!!

It will work if you heat up the receiving metal and flow the soldier, otherwise only temporary if at all.
