my Swarbick pipes from jemco came today! i got them on the bike and ran it for just a few seconds. Now im looking for some veterans who have experiece with these pipes. The bike is a 73 T500 with VM 32 carbs. Where should i start with the jetting? Im guessing it is very lean right now but i just dont know how many sizes to go up on the mains and pilots. Can anybody give me a clue as to were to go?
thanks
ryan

Where are you on the Mains and Pilots now?Stock Air box?Pods? Usually you'll want to start with several sizes larger than what you have and work your way down to what runs best.Right now with the Jets I'm running in my bike I'm 1 or 2 sizes lower on the Main jets than what everyone else usually winds up with and I'm still a bit rich.

OK try going up 1 size on your Pilots and 4 sizes on your Mains.Step down on your Main jets one size at the time until it clears up.The T500 is a PITA to jet with aftermarket filters and without the stock Airbox. With my 69 t500 I'm running VM 34's,Uni pods and J&R Chambers and I still can't get a flat spot out.Still a little too rich with one size and a tad bit too lean with the other size.I'm sure yours will be a little different since it has the De tuned Intake tract and Longer Intake tubes.

Do you really have VM carbs? Are your main jets round or hex?

Or are they really stock OEM cast zinc, heavy, long body carbs with that unusual float bowl vent?

jets are round...and if i had to guess i would say stock carbs...not actual VMs. Is there a more specific way i can tell if they are true VMs? like a stamping somewhere on the carbs?

One dead give away is that the left hand carb will have a Vacuum Tube sticking out of the side of the Intake side of the carb to hook to the Petcock to work the Fuel shutoff Diaphragm. This is a Picture of a stock set of Carbs.

The other way to tell is color - Zinc - and weight. They weigh around 3 pounds versus 2 for an aluminum VM aftermarket carb.
The way that the float bowls are vented creates a different fuel slope Vs regular VM so you need to check the jetting at low revs (WOT) as well as high revs WOT.

Hello Merckid......maybe this information will be of a little use to you. I run my bike with open carbs, the motor is a little ported and I have barton squish heads, and mild expansions. I use 130 mains and have ragged it as hard as I can without melting pistons. I haven't changed the pilot jets, but I am sure I need to...
Friends of mine use pod filters, stock motors, mild pipes, and run 120 mains. The engines run crisp, and again, have not melted anything. Their bikes run well at all throttle positions, and I can cofirm they have been used hard....hope this helps...at least you'll be in the right ball park !

Much better carbs. Which variety of flats - TM, TMX or snowmobile?
There are a several of us who would love to hear what jets and needles you end up with.

That makes 3 of us and sometime soon I need to get up to Aaen in Racine WI to pick up a couple of sets of leaner (thicker) needles to go with the Q-8 fixed needle jets.
