I've read a couple of places that over 7K the pistons tend to self-destruct. Does anyone know how this changes with Wiseco's (if you can get them)? What's the next limiting factor on engine speed?

GT750 rods fit and are shorter. You will need to cut the pistons skirts and deck the cylinders, adjust porting and you will be able to reach higher RPMS

Thanks - I have to run stock exhausts in the class I'm interested in. Do you think it's worthwhile/possible to pursue higher rpm capability given this limitation? Why GT750 rods: are they stronger?

GT750 rods are shorter, hence decking the cylinders and cutting the skirts. This allows higher RPM less chance of breaking a skirt.

You can still run stock exhaust. My ported motor on the "Daytona on a shoestring" bike could run with stock or chambers with the same porting.

That makes sense. What's your opinion about boring stock carbs? (This is permissible in my class.)

I will be boring my Project GT750 carbs from 32mm out to 34mm.

I'm thinking the same size would work for the T500 carbs (but I haven't measured the slides yet.) I know the Cobra used 34 mm. The other interesting thing is how much main jets changed from the early Titans to the later years. I wonder if they changed the tuning that much or is a different type of jet?! I think I'll disassemble the '71 engine I have and work with that.

Didn't they change from Round jets in one type of needle jet to large hex in a different series of needle jet fairly early on?

My TR500 spec. motor ran standard T500 rods (AFAIK) with lightened crank. It revved easily to 10,000 rpm using GT750 pistons (1mm off the skirt for timing reasons).

so what is a safe rpm to rev a t500 to? with stock intake and jemco race pipes, stock pistons and rods and no other major mods?

I don't think its a case of what you can rev it to but rather what will it rev to with that specification. You are unlikely to get 10,000 rpm from a basically stock motor, and if you do you it will be well past peak power. The standard T500 rods are pretty strong, just ensure the oiling system is working A1 and you will be OK. I only had TZ350s to compare as a dyno and my TR500 only gave second best to the very strongest being raced at club level in 1980 (sigh..... so long ago ), Although there were more than a few riders on inferior machines who regularly showed me the way home .

Eric, I'm glad you brought this up; so the Buffalo rod is a bit shorter? ok as in how much, and whats the dimensional differences of the lower ends between the Buffalo and the Titan.
As of today, I have never had both available AT the same time to compare them side by side.

If I undertand what you talk about, 750 con rod is shorter than a 500 con rod about 6mm.
I don't understand what is a Buffalo.
To go over 10 000 rpm, shorter rod is not a solution,the shaft is too big and too heavy, so, must at first put another equilibrium and less than 64mm longuer.
Put a 750 shaft and 750 rod on a 500 T is not a bad solution but a lot of work ...
