Filters

Post by tz375 »

Anyone got any experience with pod type air filters?

I have used flat backed ones with terrible results o RD Yamahas and tried Emgos (junk), K&N (good on an RD) and UNI (good on a TZ kart), but I have no experience with them on a GT750.

Anyone got any thoughts, observations or comments?

I know that there is a difference between K&N/Emgo pods and Unis... Unis are much better on my H2...

I forget what Lane has on his buff...

Tom, Do you run them oiled and if so what filter oil do you recommend?

When you say that the H2 runs better with Uni's, is that they make more power or have less flat spots or?

I just put KN's on my T350, went up two sizes on the main jet and it runs better than ever...

I got two 15 degree for the outers and rotated them so they are narrow at the back and higher than the straight one in the center. It isn't pretty but it keeps it narrower at the side covers.

I think I'll start with 120 mains with stock pipes and maybe 130/135 with Strader exhaust.

Richard,
I tried the cheapo emgos for a while until they fell apart. It is my understanding that the metal endcaps interfere with the vacuum pulses from the carbs and actually cause an inconsistent fuel/air mixture so stay away from anything with that.
I now have oiled uni filters with a dry outer foam sleeve on and that seems to be fine.

My bike is a "bighole" I keep throwing money into, so I had to get another!

John,

I tried cheap filters years ago on an RD400 and they cost so much in pistons and rebores that I threw them away.

This time I'm starting with 6 inch long UNI fiters with a ton or filter area and foam ends. I'm expecting them to be a whole world better.

Now i need to order a bottle of filter oil

TZ, don't waste your money. For street use, all I've ever used is injector oil to oil my foam filters. Soak the filter(s) thoroughly in pure injector oil, squeeze (don't wring) them out, let them stand on a clean rag out in the sun somewhere for about 30 minutes and then install them.
You can clean them in solvent (or gasoline) quite easily and re-oil them once a month, if desired.
