GT550 3 into 1

Post by Vintageman »

I think a few of Omar's (Jemco's) 3 into 1 have sold for Suz GT550 over the years. I see a couple cafe's on the web with the pipe installed.

Anyone here have one? If so can someone make a vid of what is sounds like, maybe even running up the road (no need to be crazy, juit want to here it). How does it make it run with respect to power band?

I am thinking of getting one and my expectations is it performs similar to stock pipes, just better sound and lighter

Well if you have one do tell

Omar's is no longer in business.
The pipes are available directly from Jemco.
I just got the nickel-plated 3-into-1 for the GT750 -- they look quite nice.

Thanks. Added to my 2 stroke favorites! I wish there was a vid of it running down the road. That's the only vid he has of it.

The tach got to 6500!

How do you like it on your GT750? Do you think it limits RPM or similar to stock pipes with respect to power band peak HP RPM?

Don't you have more than one GT750?

I am looking at a rough GT550 and instead of restore to OEM I am thinking simple cafe

I have two 75 GT750s.
The red one is totally stock except for electrical updates.
The gray one has GS-series cast wheels/disk brakes + vintage 3-into-3 chambers.

Replacing the vintage 3-into-3 chambers with the 3-into-1 is a project for this spring.
The current pipes are irritatingly gutless below 4k rpm.
I have a forum topic about jetting for the 3-into-1 on the GT750 & members said the pipe should have good low end and be gutless above 6K.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11234&hilit=gt750+jetting

I don't know how the GT550 will respond to the the 3-into-1.
But they do look good on the GT550.
I think a GT550 cafe achieves maximum coolness with the 4LS & 3-into-1.

The GT550 cafe in your link definitely looks good.

They were available in black ceramic from Omar.
I talked to Jemco & I think Jon only offers either uncoated or nickel plating.
Jon emailed me two pics of the pipe on a GT550:

Whose GT550 is that?

I read the other post. I think the 3 into 1 referenced are not jemco's?
It frustrates to hear the 3 into 1give less RPM than stock. They are simply not made correctly. I fyou ever played with snowmobiles you know you can make a decent 2-1 or 3-1 system with chamber and many of the same sleds were offered with 2-2 or 3-2 for all out performance

The way to make one is for example take the middle pipe from jemco 3 into 3 system (gt380, 550 or 750) use it as is: (much of its length as possible. Critical: Make a custom 3 into 1 collector that is even and as short as possible. I have all three bike and should do this. May sell a half a dozen and retire just like Omar probably did :wth:

None of those are performance exhausts. The first is split exhaust from a sled where they split the center cylinder and then merged them. Novel. Cast manifolds are designed to keep a PWC cool and not cost too much power.

Joly Moto makes a 3 into 1 GT750 system and they have very long primary tubes ahead of the collector. What I believe to be critical on a collector is not the length but the shape and avoidance of sudden change in area.

Above certain revs the returning waves are just not very strong because they are split into 3. I will just be a waste a second will be fine and the third will be pushing through a higher pressure wave traveling in the opposite direction.

Check out the size of an AAEN 2 into 2 sled exhaust. They are huge and could not fit on a bike.

Snowmobiles are totally different animals, not a comparative. You can get some HP out of a 3 into 1, but nothing near a 3 into 3. They do make decent torque, with the loss up top. If you want the best power, convert to reeds and 3 into 3.

Just to add two data points.

I have looked at a Jemco/Omar's 3 into 1 and a Strader system and in both cases there are serious flaws in the collector design and/or fabrication that inhibit smooth flow of gas and smooth propagation of pressure waves. How critical those issues are in the scheme of things I can't tell you, but they do suggest that peak power is not their design brief.

A 3 into 1 is about 30 pounds lighter than stock OEM pipes and that alone is worth about 4-5hp equivalent and makes for a more lively snappy bike.

The sound from a 3 into 1 is way nicer than three pipes at street legal speeds. Race track not so much but at reasonable engine speeds they just sound better IMHO, so they are not a bad solution for a street bike.

Omar (Phil Little?) sold his OMAR business to someone a few years ago and I suspect that it failed to thrive under the new owner.

It has been re-opened as OMAR's Fiberglass Company by the company that made their glass parts and Jon Easton at JEMCO is still making the pipes.

It must be possible to make a single pipe system that performs well on mild air cooled 2 stroke engines. And it shouldn't like a Kerker N into 1 system.

It's possible ->
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LZhJ7opn8Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And sound awesome too (maybe this one too loud :shock: ) ->
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lpzi5RBYto" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I suppose if we were still making multi-cylinder 2 stroke bikes we could find someone like SLP who would make it for sale.

My gt550 now has a peak at ~7000 rpm (no rev monster) and if I put on Omar's design and drops off before 6000 that is quite a trade off. Again I am not sure how it performs but, suspect the points mentioned are true. Would sure like to see one in action.

The 6k limit was for the 3-into-1 on the GT750.
It might be higher for the GT550.

I think that was just an opinion too. :?:

The early GT750 and GT550 had similar power peak advertised and the later GT750 was probably little higher than GT550.

Again, I wish someone had one on a GT550 and would let us know how it works: a video of it running through gears a little aggressive would be very nice.

I am sure jabcb will let us know when he knows how it works on GT750 :wink:

My expectations are it won't limit RPM versus stock. However, if it limits rpm I suppose its restricting flow or resonates at the wrong time: wish I knew, short of buying one. Not a bad price versus ones out of japan

I ran a Strader equipped GT750 on a dyno and peak revs were lower than stock or a 3 into 3. I'm on the third version of a muffler design for the Strader that I hope will help a little but the design does not lend itself to high RPM operation.

A triple is very different to a twin in terms of pulse timing. Twins have a lot more time to complete a cycle, where triples interfere with each other much more seriously. On a triple, a 3 into 1 is really about reducing cost and complication and not about performance.

I'd like to see a 550 on the dyno with different pipes to see how it performs.
