GT750 Custom Project - Alternative Radiators?

Post by RING_DING »

Hello everyone,
I've been out of touch for a while, but have now got a hybrid project underway. I am mounting a GT750 motor into a 1994 Yamaha FZR1000 frame. The stock radiator will require modification to fit so I was wondering if anyone had any info to share on using alternative radiators?
Thanks!

Way to go Roy. :up:

Where do we go to see pictures of the project? I was given an early FZR1000 frame and swingarm a couple of years ago and that is very narrow right where I need to put the carbs. Then I bought an RF600R frame and although it looked sort of OK, it was never going to work. Maybe I need to dig that frame out again and see if I can reposition the motor to make it work.

In terms of radiator, I would imagine that almost any modern rad should work. Start with a CBR600F2/3. They were fairly shallow and not too wide. What about the Fizzer rad? It is fairly shallow and should clear the pipes.

Richard, thanks for the tip. I didn't get the radiator with the FZR as it was a rolling chassis left over from a Bimota restoration. I was a bit concerned with flow rate using a more modern rad, particularly as the hoses are a lot smaller, but I have no expertise in this area! All advice much appreciated.

I can't post any pics here any more so I will probably start a build thread on 2-Stroke World. I will post a link here for anyone interested.

That frame looks like it has way more carb clearance than the earlier frames.

I may have to drag mine out of storage and try mounting the motor on the lower bolt and see if that gives me enough space. Nice project BTW.

Posting pictures is easy if you have a server or use a photo hosting site like Photo Bucket . Just like always when responding click on the reply .. up comes the reply form to add your message , if you want to add a picture or just post a picture get the URL of the picture from the hosting site then just above the reply form there is a rectangle box with img in it . Click on this box and it will put a symbol on the reply form with a flashing line in the middle . Left click on the flashing line and then right click and paste the URL of your picture . When you click the Submit your picture is posted , try and keep the pictures reasonable size for easy loading on slow computer systems .

SuzukiDave, thanks for the guidance. Right now I am not using a photo hosting site. And I guess you do have to be a member on 2SW to see the pics. It's actually a great forum, but it's mainly Yamaha RDs.
By the way, what is that frame in your Avatar? Looks very similar to the FZR I am using.

Photo Bucket is free and pretty easy to use , below each picture you add there will be several links including the URL link that you can copy and then paste to the list . The frame i adapted for the GT engine is a 99 GSXR 750 frame viewtopic.php?f=21&t=10396" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks SuzukiDave! I was browsing your build thread and interested in the motor cradle you made. The top attachment points looks very similar to what I am dealing with. Did you make it out of steel tubing? Also what is that radiator off? Thanks!

I made the engine cradle out of a untitled frame that i picked up at the junk yard and then the cross piece out of steel pipe . The radiator is off a Suzuki TL1000 .. it was all i could find that would fit under the steering head and above the pipes .

I'm guessing that it is the top (curved) rad from the TL1000? Do you find it cools adequately?
