I really hadnt thought about it but does the stock gear on the clutch load the nut that holds on the clutch basket or the thrust bearings on both sides of the clutch support bearing ?

Now that the GS tranny has been in the engine for a while , any long term use issues come up ?

Dave,
I haven't had the bike out since November Nostalgia meet, it has been to hot here for me to race and I'm fitting expansion chambers also. I've found no problems at all with the transmission swap, if any problems do arise I will post them.

Bob,
Stay safe mate, with those crazy temps and fire all around. How close are you to bush fires?

I raced many years ago at Oran Park on New Years meeting when it was over 105 in old money and that was miserable. Sitting in leathers waiting for a race and sweat running down face and back etc, so we ended up stewing in our own juices. Took the blue dye out of my leathers and was weeks before my legs were no longer a nice shade of blue.

TZ,
I've been close to the bushfires between Sydney and Melbourne as my work takes me down the Hume Highway each night but no fire problems here where I live.
I know what you are saying about our Oran Park, it has finally been turned into a housing estate, they were saying that was going to happen in the late 60s. How about being suited up ready to ride for 3/4 of an hour at Lake Gairdner in mostly black leathers with the temp in the low 50s C. My crew were tipping ice water down the neck of my leathers and feeding it through a length of fuel line into my helmet to hydrate me.
PM me your email address and I will send you some pics, I don't know how to post them on here.

And the pictures of the gear shafts and the mods to them using the changes outlined in the topic . Bob also had the input shaft machined for oiling to the clutch drum needle bearing . Image Image Image Image

Dave, I have the parts all ready to do so for two of the GT750 engines, and I am seriously contemplating one of the retrofits for this B model project bike.

To touch on your other point, I also looked at the Bandit 600 gearbox for a six speed, but a few things need to be figured out and that's all done AFTER you buy it.
The six speed boxes all have smaller diameter gears, which automatically means the shafts will be closer together on centres compared to a that of a Buffalo five speed.
Will the gear shaft centres be correct in a Buffalo case with correct backlash clearance, probably not but you could make that part adjustable in the cases on the output shafts bearings. It will require some precise re-machining, possibly having eccentric inserts fabricated and then locked in place.
Next issue will be the selector drum, will the forks reach the gears correctly and if not then more machining will be required not only to move the drum but also the shifter gate mechanism.
I have a GS550 six speed box but no selector drum parts, I know its a bit too wide but I can address that issue, its the drum I need to get to check the other major issue for.
Two strokes, its just that simple.
