Ron Grant
Hi all, new to this site but been a regular on Muzza's for a while. Looking at the Late Ron Grants hop up tips circa 1972, he/they tease us with pictures of close ratio gears but don't say where they came from. Muzza seems to think its a combo of t250-350-500 and maybe so but I have a t350 trans and I don't believe there's anything from it that would work. I'm thinking something from some off road models may have found there way into his gearbox, any thoughts of what might work. Also wondering if there's some dirt bike primary drive setups that might be a source for cheap straight cut gears in a T500. The Titan has 26t on crank and 65 on clutch and the closest match up I could find was TM400 with 68 and 22 but an RM 465 has 26 on crank but I'm still looking. Your GS to GT750 trans swap was very interesting and has me wondering if something like that could or has been done with the Titan, say a GS550 or perhaps a newer gs500. Trying to make my version of a TR500 for fomula 500 Ahrma racing so all the questions. Thanks for any info you send my way.

Re: Ron Grant
thanks for the reply Suzukidave, yea I knew about the Nova stuff but its a bit out of my budget, make that a lot out of budget. I was hoping someone had tried the gs550 for a trans swap. Also the dirt bike primary gears swap but I know that's a long shot.

Re: Ron Grant
Well thats not so good, looks like I'l have to use a gs engine with t500 cylinders, should be an easy fit.

Re: Ron Grant
2 smoke cylinders on a 4 stroke bottom end. How exactly is that going to work?

Re: Ron Grant
Ron had access to close ratio transmissions from the factory back in the day although the average person could get most of the same stuff at the Suzuki parts counter. At some point Suzuki figured out how to fit a t500 crankcase with a six speed gearbox and those parts were available at the Suzuki parts counter too I bet. But that was a while ago. Now Nova is pretty much the only game in town for a drop in solution unless you luck into a used factory CR trans. I've been looking for a while and I've not seen much in the way of TR500 stuff on the market lately. I suspect a lot of it got broken while racing.
The T500 had a single shift fork shaft. Someone pointed out a while back the six speed GS550 has a single shift fork shaft as well. See if you can scoop up a GS550 trans assembly on ebay and then post the parts side by side. There's many talented people on here that could tell you if it's close enough to be worth trying to put the two together.

Re: Ron Grant
Thanks Jim, I will do the ebay thing and post some pic, also the latter model gs500 has only a single selector setup, not sure which would be better to try?

Re: Ron Grant
Well I did some looking around ebay, lots of 550 and 500 gs trans listed. I thought the best way to start was by getting a shift drum and see if it would fit, got one from a 83-85 model as that yr shift mechanism looks more like the t500, unfortunately it is narrower and left side spindle is bigger so, I am guessing the transmission would be narrower also. I do however have a gs750 trans and shift drum and with that one the shift drum is almost the right length and fits but the detent is on the rt side and the trans is also narrower. Ist gear on that trans is 29t as apposed to the t500's 30 and does mesh with both oil pump and counter shaft gears but not quite as deep [as you'd expect]. Problem with fitting this gear is the shift dogs won't engage and of course the splines on the two trans are different. So I guess the gs 550 trans idea is not a go. Still think that some gears from that era MX bikes might work for 3rd thru 5th and may be a way to get straight cut primary gears. That's my 2 cents worth.
