T500 Oil Leak from Ex Port

Post by mario03srt »

All,

I have had my 69 T500 back together for a couple of weeks, and got it running ok, but new carbs not tuned completely yet. I did not split the engine and only did a top end refresh.

Any way the right side of the engine is leaking some oil from what appears the exhaust port. Anyone have a diagnosis? Right side crank seal? Any way I'm bummed out about this and hoping for a resonably painless fix.

Some leakage is not unusual and means that you need a little high temp RTV to seal it. But the real question is why is there lots of oil. It may be the crank seals and you can check them with a leakdown test. It is also possible that the issue is a check valve in one of the oil pipes that may be stuck open. Remove the oil feed pipes and clean them out but do not use compressed air or the valves will be damaged.

BTW, what pipes are those? They look good.

Is this oily residue creeping out of the port? .....and finding it's way between the fins? Is it possible that your exhaust gasket is simply just not sealing properly? The exhaust gas is oily, just take a look around the end of a silencer, there is usually an oily build up. Anywhere that exhaust gases escape will be the same. I ran my bike with a cracked head for a while, and that was the same...black oily goo built up between the fins of the head, and I have had the oily mess around an exhaust port too, when it wasn't fully sealed.
